Vertical ophthalmoplegia due to a unilateral periaqueductal gray matter infarct in an adolescent.

Brainstem strokes affecting the periaqueductal gray matter of the midbrain can cause vertical ophthalmoplegia. Accompanying clinical features are frequently associated and reflect the involvement of other brainstem structures. We report on an adolescent presenting with vertical gaze palsy and left mydriatic pupil as the only clinical expression of a small infarct located in the left periaqueduc...

Blink reflexes and magnetic resonance imaging in focal unilateral central trigeminal pathway demyelination.

The electrically elicited blink reflex allows quantitative analysis of the corneal reflex which traverses the trigeminal and facial nerves and the brainstem. Two patients presenting with symptomatic unilateral trigeminal lesions are described, in whom the blink reflexes showed conduction block and slowing at predictable sites in the central pathways, and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed pre...

Acoustic neuroma in an adolescent without neurofibromatosis: case study.

When acoustic neuromas are found in younger age groups, they are typically bilateral and associated with neurofibromatosis (NF). A unilateral acoustic neuroma in a child or adolescent without NF is rare. We report audiometric, auditory brainstem response (ABR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data for a 15-year-old male with an acoustic neuroma but without associated NF. The patient was see...

Speech-evoked auditory brainstem response in children with unilateral hearing loss

Speech-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and speech recognition measures were evaluated in children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) and normal hearing (NH). There were significant differences between the two hearing groups for several components of the response in quiet and in noise. Children with UHL performed worse than children with NH on all speech recognition measures in quiet ...

Risk factors of postoperative pulmonary complications following elective craniotomy for patients with tumors of the brainstem or adjacent to the brainstem

The aim of the present study was to analyze the risk factors of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) of elective craniotomy for patients presenting with brainstem tumors or tumors adjacent to the brainstem. A total of 162 consecutive patients with a brainstem tumor or adjacent brainstem tumor undergoing elective craniotomy were included and monitored. Potential risk factors were identif...
